Eco friendly Christmas Tree: Real vs Artificial trees

Eco friendly Christmas Tree: Real vs Artificial trees

Eco friendly choices during holidays

Christmas trees are popping out at every store this week, and soon the real tree lots will pop up around town!  If you're on the fence about getting a real tree or artificial, let's talk about the pro's and con's on both options.

Reuse it till the wheels fall off, or branches.

Artificial trees might seem like the eco friendlier option, they are reusable after all!  But due to the manufacturing process and materials used you would have to reuse the same tree 10-20 years to offset the environmental impact.

Artificial Christmas tree

Artificial trees are made of PVC and steel, which will not ever fully leave the landfill they are dumped at regardless of how many years you reuse it.  Real trees on the other hand, are fully biodegradable and can be composted anywhere.

Look into better ways to discard your artificial tree.

Once your artificial tree has served its purpose in your home, donate it to a family in need or your local thrift store. Not in perfect condition?  Don't sweat it, craft makers visit thrift stores looking for items to restore and renovate.

Artificial Trees Can Be Safer Than Real Trees

Real pine trees can be a fire hazard if not properly cared for.  If you travel for the holidays but want to decorate a tree in your home too, an artificial tree would be the safer option.

Real Trees Are The Eco Friendlier Christmas Tree

Tree farms are where Christmas trees come from so you don't have to worry about harming the wild life.  These trees are grown like food crops, for every tree cut down the farmer will plant 4-5 new trees.

But Isn't Cutting Down Trees Bad? -

It can be if you're cutting from the wild life or in large scale, but when done right it actually benefits the land.

Trees take an average of 10 ten years before they are ready to be cut down for the holidays.   During those years they serve as habitat for wild life, nourish the soil and land, as well as the air quality.

Shop Local, Support Local Farms

Real trees are actually the greener option environmentally and economically.  Supporting local businesses is a huge environmental factor, not only are you boosting your local economy but you are cutting the shipping from China where artificial trees are produced.  There is also no excess packaging.

Going to the tree lot and picking our your Christmas tree with your family is a sweet tradition that marks off the holiday season.

Care Tips For Real Christmas Trees

The Christmas tree becomes the house centerpiece but don't forget it can also be a house air freshener.  To keep the lovely holiday pine scent in your home throughout the holidays always keep your tree watered.  Check the water daily because they can dry very quickly, and you can also pop the resin bubbles to release extra scent.
